Good to know
Mass and volume cannot be converted without substance density. Never use this calculator for medication dosing.
Why you need density to convert mg into teaspoons
Milligrams measure mass, while teaspoons measure volume. You cannot convert between them without knowing the substance's density. This tool requires either water as an explicitly labeled approximation or a density value entered by you. Select mass-to-volume or volume-to-mass, choose units, and compare the result with the formula.
Try the numbers
For water near room temperature, use an approximate density of 1 g/mL. At that density, 5,000 mg = 5 g = 5 mL, which equals about 1.014 US teaspoons. The same 5,000 mg of a different ingredient may fill a different volume. With a custom density of 0.8 g/mL, 5 g occupies 6.25 mL.
What the calculation uses
Volume (mL) = mass (g) ÷ density (g/mL). Mass (g) = volume (mL) × density (g/mL). Milligrams ÷ 1,000 = grams; 1 US teaspoon = 4.92892159375 mL.
Read before using the result
Bulk density for flour, sugar, powders and other materials depends on packing, particle size, moisture and temperature. This tool cannot verify an ingredient's density or the correct amount for a medicine. Never use it to calculate a medication dose or substitute kitchen spoons for calibrated dosing devices.
