Good to know

US customary cups and tablespoons have exact metric definitions. Metric cups and Australian tablespoons are different sizes; do not mix weight with volume.

THE METHOD

Cooking volume conversions explained

This converter measures volume. It converts among US teaspoons, US tablespoons, US cups, US fluid ounces, milliliters, liters, a 250 mL metric cup, and an Australian 20 mL tablespoon. Choose the source and destination units, then enter a number. Units are explicit because the same word can mean different amounts across countries.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Try the numbers

A US tablespoon contains exactly three US teaspoons. Therefore, 2 US tablespoons equal 6 US teaspoons. One US cup is 236.5882365 mL, so half a US cup is approximately 118.294 mL. A 250 mL metric cup is not equal to a US cup.

FORMULA & UNITS

What the calculation uses

1 US tsp = 4.92892159375 mL. 1 US tbsp = 14.78676478125 mL. 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL. 1 US fl oz = 29.5735295625 mL. 1 metric cup = 250 mL. 1 Australian tbsp = 20 mL.

IMPORTANT LIMITATIONS

Read before using the result

These are volume conversions only. Converting cups to grams requires ingredient density. A fluid ounce is a volume unit; an ounce by weight measures mass. Household spoons are unreliable for medication dosing, which should follow the prescribed mL instructions and a properly graduated device.

Standards: NIST Office of Weights and Measures. Medication safety: FDA-hosted guidance on oral-liquid dosing.
