Steps to distance
calculator.
Turn a step count into kilometers and miles, or find how many steps a distance takes. Use your own step length, or work it out from a short walk, and see how much the estimate can vary.
Your steps,
your distance.
- Distance = steps × step length. Steps = distance ÷ step length.
- Step length is one step: from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other. A stride is two steps.
- Your own measured step length is always better than a generic average.
- The range shown assumes your real step length could be 10% shorter or longer than the value used.
How do you convert steps to distance?
Multiply the number of steps by the length of one step. With a step length of 76 cm, 10,000 steps cover 10,000 × 0.76 m = 7,600 m, which is 7.6 km or about 4.72 miles.
distance = steps × step length
steps = distance ÷ step lengthHow do I find my step length?
Walk a known distance at your normal pace and count your steps. A standard running track is 400 m around the inside lane. If you take 520 steps, your step length is 400 ÷ 520 = 0.769 m (76.9 cm). Choose Work it out from a walk to let the calculator do this for you. Longer walks give a more reliable average.
Pedometers and fitness apps often ask for a “stride length” when they mean the length of one step. If yours wants a stride, check whether it means one step or two.
Why not estimate step length from height?
Many websites multiply height by about 0.41 or 0.42 to estimate step length. When researchers tested a 42%-of-height rule in healthy young adults, it underestimated the measured value on average (0.71 m estimated against 0.78 m measured) and matched individuals only moderately well. Step length also changes a lot with walking speed and age. This calculator therefore asks for your own value instead of guessing.
How accurate is a step-based distance?
It is an estimate. Your step length changes with pace, slope, terrain, footwear and fatigue, and step counters can miss or add steps. That is why the calculator shows a range for a step that is 10% shorter or longer. For a measured route, use GPS or a mapped distance.
Worked examples.
10,000 steps
10,000 steps with a step length of 76 cm.
7.6 km, or about 4.72 miles (6.84–8.36 km if the step is 10% shorter or longer).

You count 520 steps for one 400 m lap, then walk 8,000 steps in a day.
Your step is 76.9 cm, so 8,000 steps is about 6.15 km (3.82 miles).

How many steps does a 5 km walk take with a 70 cm step?
About 7,143 steps.
Load this exampleSteps in a mile
How many steps are in a mile with a 30-inch step?
Exactly 2,112 steps (63,360 inches ÷ 30).

does not do.
- It does not measure your route. Distances are estimates from your step count and step length.
- It does not estimate calories, pace or health benefits.
- Walking and running step lengths are very different. Use a step length measured at the pace you are converting.
- It cannot correct for steps that your device miscounted.
Common questions.
How many steps are in a kilometer?
1,000 m ÷ your step length. With a 76 cm step that is about 1,316 steps; with a 65 cm step about 1,538.
How many km is 10,000 steps?
It depends on your step length: about 6.5 km with a 65 cm step and 8 km with an 80 cm step.
Is stride length the same as step length?
Strictly, a stride is two steps (left and right). Many devices use “stride” to mean one step, so check what yours expects.
What is a typical step length?
It varies with height, speed and age. In one study of healthy young adults the measured average was about 0.78 m. Measure your own for a better estimate.
